K. J. Sarasa founded the Bharatanatyam institute 'Sarasalaya' in 1960 in Madras (now Chennai), where she trained a large number of students in the Vazhuvoor bani style. She is recognized as one of the first female Nattuvanars and choreographed over 50 dance dramas.
