Sri Mahalakshmi Natyalaya was launched in 1967 in Mylapore, Chennai, by the natyacharya Kalaimamani S.K. Kameswaran and his wife, Natya Thilagam Saroja Kameswaran, who named the school after their daughter Mahalakshmi. Kameswaran taught in the Vazhuvoor bani, which he absorbed over years of singing and playing nattuvangam for Vazhuvoor Ramiah Pillai's disciples. Saroja Kameswaran taught at the school alongside a four-decade tenure as dance faculty at Rosary Matriculation School in Mylapore. The school is today directed by their daughter and disciple, Mahalakshmi Kameswaran.
