Argha Chatterjee is a dedicated Odissi dancer, teacher, and institution head based in Kolkata, India. His profound journey in Indian classical dance began at the tender age of three. He received his rigorous training in Odissi under the tutelage of esteemed gurus, primarily Sujata Mohapatra, and also under Pankaj Charan Das. Through this lineage, his great-grand guru is the legendary Odissi maestro, Kelucharan Mohapatra, establishing a strong foundation in the classical tradition. Chatterjee initially pursued a different career path, working as a flight steward. However, his unwavering passion for dance led him to make a significant life decision: he left his job to fully commit to his artistic calling, a move that highlights the dedication required to pursue classical arts professionally. This commitment underscores the challenges male classical dancers often face in India, including societal perceptions and financial struggles, which Chatterjee himself experienced, at one point surviving on a minimal diet after quitting his job until his dance career began to yield monetary returns. As a performer, Argha Chatterjee has established himself within the Odissi community. Beyond his performances, he is a dedicated educator, having founded and currently leading the "Madhuradyuti Center for performing arts" in an upscale locality of Kolkata. His institution plays a vital role in nurturing the next generation of Odissi dancers, with its student body including both male and female aspirants. Chatterjee's teaching legacy is evident through his disciples, such as Subhasish Acharya, an Odissi dancer from Kolkata who has completed a Masters in Performing Arts and performed at various national and international dance festivals. Another documented student is Meghna Das. Chatterjee also contributes to the dance community by serving as an examiner for classical dance examinations. His work continues to promote and preserve the Odissi tradition in India.
