Bireshwar Gautam, an internationally acclaimed Kathak dancer and prolific Thumri singer, was a significant figure in Indian classical dance. Born in 1967, he tragically passed away at the age of 42 on December 11, 2009, when he was found murdered in his Oshiwara flat in Mumbai. Gautam's initiation into singing was guided by his father, and he was a dedicated disciple of Kathak guru Damayanti Joshi. He was celebrated for mastering both Kathak and Thumri, a rare feat that earned him recognition as a "rare talent." Throughout his career, Gautam delved into the historical roots of Kathak, notably through his 'Baithke Bhao' concerts, which recreated the dance form as it was performed in the kothas of North India centuries ago, often combining Thumri singing with Kathak. He was an empanelled member of the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), through which he traveled globally, promoting Indian culture. Gautam headed the Kathak department at the Akhil Bharatiya Gandharva Mahavidyalaya Vashi in Navi Mumbai and founded the 'Sur Jhankar' academy at ISKCON, Juhu. He also established the Kathak Darpan Cultural Centre, a charitable trust dedicated to cultural promotion. Shortly before his death, he received a fellowship from the Ministry of Culture for his research into Kathak and Thumri, and his show "Kathak aur Thumri Ke Rang" received a standing ovation at the NCPA.
