🪔 About
Pandit Shambhu Maharaj (1910 – 4 November 1970) was a revered Guru of the Lucknow Gharana of the Indian classical dance form, Kathak. Born as Shambhunath Mishra in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, he hailed from the illustrious Maharaj family of hereditary Kathak performers. He was the youngest son of Kalka Prasad Maharaj, a renowned Kathak exponent and tabla player. Shambhu Maharaj received his initial training from his father, his uncle Bindadin Maharaj, and his eldest brother Achchan Maharaj. He was initiated into Kathak by Bindadin Maharaj at the age of eight. Beyond dance, he also delved into Hindustani classical music, learning from Ustad Rahimuddin Khan. Shambhu Maharaj made his professional debut at the All India Music Conference in Lucknow in 1926, where he was awarded a gold medal for his 'tayari' (artistic preparation). In 1955, he relocated to New Delhi to head the dance department at Shriram Bharatiya Kala Kendra, which later became the Kathak Kendra. He played a pivotal role in revitalizing Kathak, emphasizing 'bhava' (emotional expression) and an elegant, courtly style that blended technical precision with profound storytelling. He endeavored to restore Kathak as pure Natwari Nritya, reviving classical thumris and bhajans for the Kathak repertoire. His contributions extended significantly to pedagogy, shaping the Lucknow gharana through his numerous disciples. Shambhu Maharaj passed away on November 4, 1970, in New Delhi, due to throat cancer. Awards & Honours: Padma Shree Award (1958), Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship (1967).
