U.K. Chandrabhaga Devi was a pioneering Bharatanatyam dancer and teacher who significantly contributed to the art form's development and social acceptance in Karnataka, India, during the mid-20th century. Born in 1921, she embarked on a remarkable journey in classical dance at a time when it was not widely accepted among “respectable” families. Along with her husband, U.S. Krishna Rao, whom she married in February 1941, she became one of the first well-known dance couples in the state. They both undertook rigorous training in Bharatanatyam under the esteemed Guru Meenakshisundaram Pillai in Pandanallur village. Together, Chandrabhaga Devi and U.S. Krishna Rao co-founded the influential dance institution Maha Maya in Bengaluru. This academy served as a vibrant hub for training, choreography, lecture-demonstrations, and performances, attracting students from across India and internationally. Chandrabhaga Devi was particularly renowned for her mastery of *abhinaya*, the expressive aspect of dance. Her teaching methodology emphasized clarity of meaning, meticulous attention to expression, precise posture, and the individual grooming of her students. The training at Maha Maya followed a gurukula-style approach, integrating practical instruction with dance theory and broader cultural education. Beyond her roles as a performer and guru, Chandrabhaga Devi also held an administrative position as the Chairperson of the Karnataka Sangeeta Nritya Academy. During her tenure, she expanded festivals, workshops, and outreach activities, and strengthened publications and documentation initiatives related to dance. Her unwavering resolve and dedication helped open doors for young girls from “respectable families” to pursue dance, laying a crucial foundation for subsequent generations of dancers in Karnataka. Many of her disciples went on to become recognized dancers and teachers themselves. U.K. Chandrabhaga Devi passed away in 1997, leaving behind a rich legacy of dance scholarship and practice.
