Born on February 25, 1970, in Delhi, Pt. Deepak Maharaj is a distinguished Kathak artist from the illustrious Kalka-Bindadin Gharana. As the son and disciple of the legendary Kathak maestro Pt. Birju Maharaj, Deepak Maharaj began his rigorous training at a tender age under his father's expert guidance. He made his captivating stage debut at the young age of nine, showcasing remarkable talent and a deep understanding of the art form. Throughout his extensive career, Deepak Maharaj has accompanied his father on numerous concert tours, performing on prestigious platforms both in India and internationally, including the U.K., U.S.A., Canada, Italy, Germany, France, Dubai, Australia, and Russia. He has played leading roles in several iconic dance dramas choreographed by his father, such as Krishnayan, Kumar Sambhav, Katha Raghunath Ki, Rupmati-Bajbhadur, and Shan-e-Awadh, earning critical acclaim globally. His performances have graced renowned festivals like the Kathak Kendra Dance Festival, Yuva Mahotsava, Sawai Gandharva Mahotsava, and the Khajuraho Festival. Deepak Maharaj is recognized as an eighth-generation dancer and a torchbearer of the Kalka-Bindadin Gharana, bringing a modern sensitivity to traditional Kathak. Beyond his performing career, he is a dedicated teacher and mentor. He conducts numerous workshops and lecture demonstrations across India, notably as part of SPIC-MACAY's mission to promote Indian classical arts. He leads Kathak classes at Kaladham and Kala Ashram in Noida and, as of June 2023, serves as the Director of the School of Performing Arts at AAFT (Asian Academy of Film & Television) in Noida. His recent portrayal of Romeo in the ballet "Romeo and Juliet" has also received immense praise.
