Vidushi Durga Arya is a distinguished Kathak dancer, choreographer, and teacher, recognized for her profound connection to the Lucknow Gharana. Born in Nainital, India, her family later moved to Delhi where her talent for dance was discovered at a young age by her music teacher. She began her Kathak training at the age of six, initially under Kundanlal of Kathak Kendra, who provided free lessons due to her exceptional talent. This was followed by a seven-year elementary course with Guru Reba Vidyarthi and a three-year diploma course under Shri Munna Shukla. Durga Arya further honed her artistry by completing a two-year master's course and blossoming under the guidance of the legendary Kathak maestro Pandit Birju Maharaj at Bhartiya Kala Kendra, becoming his prime disciple. After completing her training with Pandit Birju Maharaj in New Delhi, she toured globally with him and his dance troupe. Durga Arya has garnered numerous accolades for her enthralling performances across India, Germany, France, Italy, the UK, Russia, and the USA. In India, she has graced esteemed festivals such as the Khajuraho Dance Festival, Kalakshetra Dance Festival, and Soorya Dance Festival. Her choreographic works include productions like 'Ramayan,' 'Cricket,' 'Kabaddi,' and 'Ghungroo Tarang.' Currently settled in Germany with her German husband for over two decades, Durga Arya maintains strong ties to India, returning annually to conduct workshops and participate in solo and group productions. She is dedicated to carrying forward the legacy of pure Kathak among her students, focusing on elements of abhinaya, thumri, and the interpretative aspects of the dance form, with an emphasis on expression and narrative rooted in the Birju Maharaj tradition.
