Jagannath Prasad Mishra, popularly known as Achhan Maharaj, was a revered Kathak maestro and a prominent figure of the Lucknow Gharana. Born in 1893 in Lamoha village, Sultanpur district, Uttar Pradesh, India, he was the eldest of the three sons of Kathak exponent Kalka Prasad Maharaj. His younger brothers were Luchchu Maharaj and Shambhu Maharaj. Achhan Maharaj received his initial and extensive training in Kathak from his father, Kalka Prasad, and his paternal uncle, Bindadin Maharaj, both stalwarts of the Lucknow Gharana. He also broadened his musical expertise by receiving formal education in thumri singing from the renowned Ustad Rahimuddin Khan of Banaras. Achhan Maharaj was celebrated for his profound mastery over both Nritta (pure dance) and Bhava (expression), earning him the title of "dance emperor of the twentieth century." He was known for his graceful and emotive style, emphasizing lyrical movements, intricate footwork, and the ability to convey subtle messages through body movements that transcended words. A significant contribution was his integration of thumri singing into his performances, allowing for a more vivid and personal expression of emotions. He also composed numerous dance pieces, particularly those related to Krishna Leela, enriching the Kathak repertoire. His illustrious career included serving as a court dancer for Nawab Hamid Ali Khan of Rampur for approximately 17-18 years. He traveled extensively, performing and teaching in various courts across India, including Calcutta, Bombay, Baroda, and Raigarh. Later, he was invited by Mrs. Nirmala Joshi to teach at Delhi's School of Hindustani Music and Dance, now known as Sangeet Bharati. Achhan Maharaj's teaching legacy is immense; he was the first guru and father to the legendary Birju Maharaj. Following the demise of his father and uncle, he also took on the responsibility of training his younger brothers, Luchchu Maharaj and Shambhu Maharaj, ensuring the continuity of their family's rich Kathak tradition. He passed away in Lucknow around 1947.
