🪔 About

Ellora Patnaik, born on September 5, 1968, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, is a distinguished Canadian actress and an internationally acclaimed Odissi dancer, choreographer, and teacher. Her parents, Promod and Chitralekha Patnaik, immigrated to Canada from Odisha, India, in the 1960s. Ellora's primary dance guru was her mother, Chitralekha Patnaik, who began training her in Odissi from a very young age. She further honed her skills under the tutelage of revered gurus including the late Padma Vibhushan Kelucharan Mohapatra, the late Padma Shri Pankaj Charan Das, Padma Shri Sanjukta Panigrahi, and Padma Shri Gangadhar Pradhan. In 1986, she was selected for intensive training by Kelucharan Mohapatra at the Odissi Research Centre in Orissa, India, where she received direct instruction from him between 1988 and 1989. Patnaik has been performing and teaching Odissi professionally since 1980. In the early 1990s, she assumed the role of Executive Director of the Chitralekha Dance Academy, an institution founded by her mother. In 1994, she co-founded Chitralekha Odissi Dance Creations Incorporated (CODC) with her mother and brother, Devraj Patnaik. Through CODC, she has danced leading roles and directed or assisted in the direction of numerous productions. Her choreographic works include a 20-minute fusion piece presented at the "Wall of Peace" event in 2006 and "Timescape" in 2009, performed with Devraj Patnaik. A significant milestone in her career was the world premiere of the 31-minute solo Abhinaya, Shiva Naba Rasa in 2005, a piece created specifically for her by Guru Sri Devraj Patnaik. She has performed extensively across North America, India, the United Kingdom, and Iceland, and directed dance at the Konark Dance and Music Festival in India in 2012. In recognition of her contributions to promoting Oriya culture and Odissi dance in North America, she received the Kalashri Award from the Orissa Society of Americas in 1999. Ellora Patnaik also has a notable acting career, having graduated from the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in 1994. She has appeared in various films, television series, and theatre productions, often blending her dance expertise with her acting roles. Awards & Honours: Kalashri Award (1999).
