Ananda Shivaraman (1916 – 2001) was a globally renowned Indian classical dancer, particularly celebrated for his contributions to Kathakali. Born on April 16, 1916, to Guru Gopala Panicker and Pathiyazath Madahvi Amma, Shivaraman began his gurukulam training in Kathakali at the age of ten, under the tutelage of his father. In 1929, his talent was recognized by the eminent poet Vallathol Narayana Menon and Manakkulam Mukunda Rajah, who brought him to the Kerala Kalamandalam, where he became part of the institution's first batch of Kathakali students. Shivaraman was one of the first Indian Kathakali dancers to receive professional training from Kerala Kalamandalam. His career took an international turn in 1947 when he left Kalamandalam with Louise Lightfoot from Australia, becoming the first Indian stage artist to perform in Australia. His debut in London in 1949 was described as a sensation, and he subsequently had an extensive presence in Canada during the 1950s and 1970s, in addition to touring New Zealand, Tasmania, Fiji, Japan, the United States, and the United Kingdom. He appeared with the Melbourne National Ballet in Australia and was a guest star for the Volkoff Canadian Ballet in 1953. Shivaraman was also a highly regarded teacher at San Francisco University. Ananda Shivaraman was known for his innovative approach to Kathakali, focusing on the 'nritha' (pure dance) aspect and emphasizing body language to convey emotions, rather than solely relying on elaborate facial work and costumes. He believed that "Natya must be accessible to all classes" and experimented daringly in his presentations to achieve this vision. In 1960, he initiated the See India Foundation in Cochin, an institution dedicated to promoting Indian culture and spirituality through Kathakali lecture-demonstrations for tourists. He passed away at the age of 86 in 2001, in his village of Ezhikkara, near Cochin. Awards & Honours: Doctorate, Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Academy Fellowship.
