Jai Govinda, born Benoit Villeneuve, is a highly acclaimed figure in Indian classical dance, particularly Bharatanatyam, based in Vancouver, Canada. His journey in dance began with a full scholarship to Les Grands Ballets Canadiens in Quebec City and Montreal. Dissatisfied with the ballet climate in the mid-1970s, he embarked on a five-year spiritual journey, living in ashrams and studying Eastern philosophy, which led him to discover Bharatanatyam in a Hindu temple in Montreal. He received his Bharatanatyam training from notable gurus including Shri US Krishna Rao and Smt Chandrabhaga Devi, Shri KJ Govindarajan, Smt Jamuna Krishnan, and Dr Mamata N. Nakra. He also studied Carnatic music with Mrs Champa Seshadri and nattuvangam with KJ Govindarajan. After his Ranga Pravesh (debut) in 1983, Jai Govinda performed extensively in Canada, India, the USA, and France. His first performance in India in 1987 garnered significant praise, with renowned dance critic Subbudhu dubbing him "the Prince Charming of Bharatanatyam." In 1991, he became the first Canadian to perform at the International Foreign Artists Festival in India. Jai Govinda established the Jai Govinda Dance Academy in Vancouver in 1995, and in 1999, he founded Mandala Arts and Culture. As the artistic managing director for 25 years, he cultivated a space for excellence in Indian classical dance in Canada. Mandala's Bharatanatyam teaching program is recognized by the Canada Arts Training Funds of Heritage Canada for its professional training in British Columbia. He has also curated the "Gait to the Spirit" festival of Indian classical dance in B.C. for five consecutive years in partnership with the Dance Centre. Awards & Honours: Isadora Award for excellence in teaching and outstanding achievements in BC's dance community (2006), Mayor's Arts Award / Honouree / Dance for leadership, innovation and support of the city's cultural life (2014), Innovation in the Arts Award (2025).
