Jyoti Rout is a distinguished Indian classical dancer, teacher, and choreographer specializing in the Odissi dance style. Born on July 15, 1965, in Joda, Odisha, India, her early interest in dance was sparked by local tribal dance programs. She pursued formal training at the Utkal Sangeet Mahavidyalaya in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, where she earned a master's degree in Odissi dance. Rout was also among the first women to study and perform Chhau dance, a martial art dance form from Odisha. In 1993, Jyoti Rout achieved a significant milestone by becoming the first dancer to perform for Lord Jagannath in Puri, Odisha, after the Deva Dasi (temple dancer) tradition had ceased under British rule. The same year, she moved to the United States and founded Jyoti Kala Mandir, College of Indian Classical Arts, a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving and promoting Odissi. The academy, initially established in California, now has its main base in Fremont, California, USA, and a branch in Lingipur Bhubaneswar, Odisha, India, established in 2011/2012. Jyoti Rout is known for her profound approach to Odissi, viewing it as an act of worship and a spiritual practice. She has choreographed over 60 original Odissi pieces and is highly regarded for her Abhinaya (expression) and precise footwork. Her teaching philosophy emphasizes devotion, service, and surrender, aiming for the divine to shine through the dancer. She has trained numerous students, many of whom have become successful soloists and Odissi dance teachers, with some completing their Ranga Puja (solo debut).
