Kala, professionally known as Kala Master, is a prominent Indian choreographer and a classically trained dancer, born on March 26, 1970, in Chennai, India. She received classical training in Bharatanatyam, Kuchipudi, and Kathak dance forms. Her career in the film industry began at the young age of 12 in 1982, when she started as an assistant choreographer. She gained significant recognition in 1986 with the film "Punnagai Mannan" and became a lead choreographer for "Pudhu Pudhu Arthangal" in 1989. Over her extensive career, Kala Master has choreographed more than 4000 songs across various languages, including Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Hindi, Kannada, Oriya, Bengali, English, Italian, and Japanese. Beyond her prolific work in cinema, Kala Master is also a well-known figure in television, serving as the director and one of the three judges for the Indian reality dance talent show, "Maanada Mayilada." In recognition of her classical dance background, she was honored with the Nritya Kalanithi award for Bharatanatyam in 1990. Demonstrating her commitment to dance education, she founded Kalavin Kalalaya, a film dance college in Chennai, which she co-manages with her sisters. Her contributions to choreography have also been acknowledged with several prestigious awards, including the National Film Award for Best Choreography in 2000 for the Malayalam film "Kochu Kochu Santhoshangal" and the Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Choreography for "Chandramukhi." She has also received a "Natiya Tarakai" award, Filmfare Awards, and Screen Awards for her outstanding work as a choreographer.
