Padma Subrahmanyam, born on February 4, 1943, in Madras (now Chennai), India, is a distinguished Indian classical Bharatanatyam dancer, research scholar, choreographer, teacher, Indologist, and author. Her parents, K. Subrahmanyam, a renowned filmmaker and freedom fighter, and Meenakshi Subrahmanyam, a music composer and lyricist, fostered an artistic environment for her upbringing. Padma Subrahmanyam began her dance training at Nrityodaya, a dance school founded by her father in 1942, initially under the guidance of Kausalya. She later trained extensively under the esteemed Guru Vazhuvoor B. Ramaiyah Pillai, having her Arangetram (first public performance) in 1956. Her research-oriented approach led her to study under other gurus like Dandayuthapani Pillai for 'adavus' and Gowri Ammal for 'abhinaya', and she also learned from various Devadasis. Simultaneously, she pursued her academic education, earning a Bachelor's degree in Music, a Master's in Ethnomusicology, and a Ph.D. in Dance from Annamalai University. Her doctoral thesis focused on the reconstruction of the 108 Karanas (basic units of dance) described in the Natya Shastra, highlighting them as dynamic movements rather than static poses. Padma Subrahmanyam is widely recognized as the developer and founder of the dance form Bharata Nrithyam, which bridges the gap between ancient theory and contemporary practice. She currently serves as the Director and President of Nrityodaya in Chennai, where she has developed a new pedagogy for body training based on the Natya Shastra, providing holistic training to her disciples. Her contributions extend to designing sculptures of the 108 Karanas for the Nataraja temple at Satara, Maharashtra. She has authored numerous articles, research papers, and books, and has given lectures globally, promoting Indian culture and dance.
