🪔 About
Kalamandalam P.G. Radhakrishnan is a distinguished figure in Indian classical dance, renowned for his contributions as a Kathakali singer. Hailing from South Kerala, he developed a keen interest in music from a young age, initially studying Carnatic vocal music under Kadakkavoor Velukutty Bhagawathar. He further honed his skills in Kathakali music at the prestigious Kerala Kalamandalam, where he trained under veteran gurus such as Neelakandan Nambeesan and Gangadharan. Radhakrishnan also continued his Carnatic music education with A. Sankara Warrier. Throughout his career, Radhakrishnan has carved a significant niche as a Kathakali singer, celebrated for his bhava-laden renditions that profoundly enhance the stage performances of Kathakali actors. He is deeply familiar with the intricate grammar and stylistics of Cholliyattam. His singing of slokams and padams in Kathakali echoes the distinctive voice culture of his mentor, Kalamandalam Gangadharan, yet he possesses a unique breadth and depth in his swaras. Radhakrishnan is known for his authentic approach, refraining from artificial modulations and crooning, always respecting the visual semantics of Kathakali. His mastery over rhythm and tempos is remarkable, and he shows a particular inclination for ragas like Abheri, Sindhubhairavi, and Bhagasri. Emulating his guru Neelakandan Nambeesan, Radhakrishnan believes the principal vocalist acts as the director of the Kathakali stage. He is recognized as a "born Ponnani" (principal) vocalist, rarely performing as a Sangidi (supporting) singer. In a notable performance, he also took on the acting role of Panchali in "Kirmeeravadham Kathakali," demonstrating his versatility within the art form. His significant contributions to Kathakali music have been recognized with several accolades, including the Kalamandalam Award for Kathakali music in 2012 and the Painkulam Ramachakyar Award in 2015. Awards & Honours: Kalamandalam Award (Kathakali music) (2012), Painkulam Ramachakyar Award (2015).
