Kalamandalam Neelakantan Nambisan (1919–1985) was a pioneering and trend-setting Kathakali musician from Kerala, India, renowned for his transformative contributions to the vocal aesthetics of this classical dance-drama. Born on November 2, 1919, in Kothachira village of Palakkad district, Nambisan began his artistic journey by learning Ashtapadis in the Sopanam style and Ottamthullal from his elder brother Parameswaran Nambisan. He also received training in maddalam from Vellattanhur Raman Nambisan. Nambisan joined Kerala Kalamandalam as a teenager in 1932, making his stage debut on November 2 of that year during the institution's second-anniversary celebrations. At Kalamandalam, he was initiated into Kathakali singing by veterans Samikutty Bhagavatar and Kuttan Bhagavatar. He further honed his skills in Carnatic music under Kakkat Karanavappadu and later became a prominent disciple of the epoch-making guru Mundaya Venkitakrishna Bhagavatar (1881-1957). Nambisan's most significant contribution was his revolutionary approach to Kathakali music, which marked a quantum transition from its traditional Sopanam base to a more ornate, sophisticated, and bhava-oriented Carnatic style. His weighty, yet emotive and pitch-perfect renditions, infused Kathakali songs with a new depth, making them more aligned with emotional narratives and dramatic contexts. He also refashioned the music for Krishnanattam dance-drama in Guruvayur. He joined Kerala Kalamandalam as a teacher in 1946 and eventually retired as its principal in the early 1980s. He also served as a tutor at PSV Natyasangham in Kottakkal. Nambisan's teaching legacy is immense, having mentored a legion of disciples who went on to define contemporary Kathakali music.
