Kapila Vatsyayan (1928-2020) was a preeminent Indian scholar of classical dance, art, architecture, and art history, widely recognized as a cultural matriarch and a legend in her lifetime. Born in Delhi, she pursued a comprehensive academic journey, earning an MA in English literature from Delhi University, a second MA in Education from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and a PhD from Banaras Hindu University. Her early training in dance was extensive, encompassing Kathak under the legendary Achhan Maharaj, Manipuri under Guru Amubi Singh, Bharatanatyam under Meenakshi Sundaram Pillai, and Odissi under Surendranath Jena. She also delved into Western modern dance techniques, including movement analysis and dance notation, under luminaries like Juana de Laban and Hanya Holm. Vatsyayan's career was multifaceted, blending scholarship with significant administrative roles. She served as a bureaucrat in the Ministry of Education, where she was instrumental in establishing numerous national institutions of higher education. A pivotal figure in Indian cultural policy, she was the founding director of the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA) in Delhi, a premier institution for arts and culture, which she led from its inception in 1987 as a founder trustee and member secretary, and later as its academic director and chairperson. She also co-conceptualized the Centre for Cultural Resources and Training (CCRT) in 1979, aiming to integrate culture with education. Vatsyayan authored over 20 books and more than 200 research papers, teaching at universities in Delhi, Banaras, Philadelphia, and California. Her interdisciplinary approach to the arts, linking dance with literature, sculpture, painting, music, and theatre, profoundly shaped the understanding of Indian performing arts globally.
