🪔 About

Mayadhar Raut (1930–2025) was a pivotal Indian classical dancer, choreographer, and guru instrumental in the revival, codification, and popularization of Odissi as a recognized classical dance form. Born on July 6, 1930, in Kantapenhara village, Cuttack, Odisha, he began his training as a gotipua at age seven under Guru Kali Charan Patnaik, performing professionally by 1942–1943. He further honed his skills under gurus like Pankaj Charan Das and received a scholarship in 1955 to study at Rukmini Devi Arundale's Kalakshetra in Chennai for four years, where he mastered ancient texts such as the Natyashastra and Abhinaya Darpana. Raut's contributions were crucial in elevating Odissi from a regional folk-temple art to a structured classical idiom. In 1952, he joined Kala Vikas Kendra in Cuttack as its first Odissi teacher, developing a structured syllabus. He was a co-founder of the Jayantika association in 1959, alongside luminaries like Kelucharan Mohapatra, where he helped standardize mudras, poses, and abhinaya based on shastric principles. He introduced key elements like sanchari bhava (narrative transitions in emotion) and mudra viniyoga (application of hand gestures) in 1955, enriching the form's expressive vocabulary and contributing to its official classical status from the Sangeet Natak Akademi. In the late 1960s, Raut relocated to Delhi, joining Nritya Niketan in 1967, and from 1970 to 1995, he served as head of the Odissi department at Delhi's Shriram Bharatiya Kala Kendra, mentoring generations of dancers. His choreography, notably the Gita Govinda ashtapadis premiered in 1971, emphasized shringara rasa and drew directly from Jayadeva's poetry, influencing Odissi's aesthetic evolution. Often hailed as one of the "fathers of Odissi," he passed away in Delhi on February 22, 2025, leaving an enduring legacy. Awards & Honours: Orissa Sangeet Natak Akademi Award (1977), Sangeet Natak Akademi Award (1985), Sahitya Kala Parishad Award (1984), Padma Shri (2010), Sangeet Natak Akademi Tagore Ratna (2011), Utkal Pratibha Puraskar (1984), Rajeev Gandhi Samman (2003), Kavi Samrat Upendra Bhanja Samman (2005), Biju Patnaik Samman (1993).
