Kavya Balaji is an Indian classical dancer, choreographer, and teacher known for her versatility across various dance forms and her efforts to bridge cultural gaps through movement. Born and raised in the United States, she received formal training in Bharatanatyam until the age of 18. She also explored other styles such as jazz, modern, ballet, and salsa during her time at the University of Arizona, where she founded the fusion dance group "Om Shanti". In May 2016, Kavya launched her own dance studio, Black Swan Dance, in Chennai, India, focusing on fusion dancing and a unique style she termed "Swanography," which integrates elements from hip hop, classical, and Tamil kuthu dance. She has choreographed for music videos and a Malayalam film, "Godha" (2017). Her work has also been featured on major South Indian stages and screens, including a Tamil anthology series on Amazon Prime and the Bigg Boss Malayalam Opening Ceremony. Currently based in Dresden, Germany, Kavya is the Founder and Creative Director of Bolly Kuthu Europe, leading the first Indian dance team representing Dresden and Berlin. Through this initiative, she performs and conducts workshops across Europe, aiming to bring Indian storytelling and rhythm to international audiences. She has performed for the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Mr. M.K. Stalin, and at prestigious international platforms like the Indian Embassy in Berlin, Welt Tanz (World Dance), and Kultur Centre festivals. Beyond performing and teaching, Kavya is also a Movement Facilitator, conducting corporate workshops and therapeutic sessions that merge rhythm with mindfulness.
