🪔 About
Kalanidhi Narayanan (born Kalanidhi Ganapathi on December 7, 1928, in Madras, British India, and passed away on February 21, 2016, in Chennai, India) was a revered Indian classical dancer and an iconic guru of Bharatanatyam, particularly celebrated for her mastery and teaching of Abhinaya (the art of expression). She was among the first non-devadasi Brahmin girls to learn and perform Bharatanatyam on stage. Her early training began at age seven, under several distinguished gurus. She learned Abhinaya from Mylapore Gowri Ammal, one of the last Devadasis of the Kapaleeshwara temple, and Chinnayya Naidu. Nritta (pure dance) was taught by Kannappa Mudaliar of Kanchipuram. For Carnatic music, essential for dancers, she trained under Manakkal Sivarajan and, more significantly, under Kamakshi Ammal, daughter of the legendary Veena Dhanammal, from whom she acquired a rich repertoire of Padams and Javalis. Narayanan had a brief but acclaimed performing career between 1938 and 1943, making her stage debut (Arangetram) at age 12 at the Madras Music Academy. However, after her marriage into a conservative family at sixteen, she took a thirty-year hiatus from public dance life. She re-entered the field in 1973 at the age of 46, at the request of art patron Y. G. Doraiswamy, to teach Abhinaya to Alarmel Valli. This marked the beginning of her illustrious teaching career, during which she became the most sought-after Abhinaya guru. She founded her institution, Abhinayasudha, in Madras (now Chennai) in 1980, and also conducted special courses at institutions like M.S. University, Baroda, and the National Centre for the Performing Arts, Bombay. Kalanidhi Narayanan's profound impact on Bharatanatyam, especially in revitalizing and systematizing the teaching of Abhinaya, earned her numerous accolades and a legacy of hundreds of students worldwide. Awards & Honours: Padma Bhushan (1985), Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for Bharatanatyam (1990), Emeritus Fellowship of the Department of Culture, Government of India (1990), Nrithya Choodamani from Sri Krishna Gana Sabha (1990), Kalaimamani award from Govt of Tamil Nadu (1990), Kalidas Samman from Govt of Madhya Pradesh (1998), Sangeet Natak Akademi Tagore Ratna for Dance (2011).
