🪔 About
Khagendranath Barman is a renowned Indian classical dance figure, a septuagenarian Guru of Bharatanatyam, and a prominent disciple of the legendary Dr. Rukmini Devi Arundale, founder of the Kalakshetra style. He embarked on his dance journey from Guwahati, traveling to Madras (now Chennai) to receive rigorous training directly under Dr. Arundale, whom he affectionately calls 'Atai'. After completing his training, Guru Barman settled in Calcutta (now Kolkata), where he significantly contributed to the propagation of Bharatanatyam. He held a secured position as a Professor of Bharatanatyam at Rabindra Bharati University, where he has been instrumental in training numerous batches of students in the Kalakshetra bani. Guru Barman is also recognized for his original dance compositions and his dedication to honoring his mentor, Dr. Rukmini Devi Arundale, through events like 'Guru Sishya Parampara'. He continues to be an active performer and teacher, with his performances showcasing intricate footwork and sculpturesque poses. His teaching legacy extends through his own institution and his work at other dance centers, fostering the next generation of Bharatanatyam dancers.
