Kumbakonam K. Bhanumathi (1922–2006) was a distinguished Indian Bharatanatyam dancer, born in Kumbakonam, Tamil Nadu, into a family of traditional dancers, specifically a devadasi family. Her formal training in Bharatanatyam began under the tutelage of Papanasam Vadivelu Nattuvanar, under whom she had her arangetram, or debut performance, at the tender age of ten. She further honed her skills by studying with other notable gurus such as Shanmukha Sundaram Nattuvanar and Mylapore Gowri Ammal. Bhanumathi's early career saw her performing extensively with her aunt, Varalakshmi, forming a popular duo known as the 'Varalakshmi Bhanumati Duet'. Together and as a solo artist, she graced stages across India and performed in Ceylon for 25 years. Her artistry extended to cinema, where she took on the female lead role in the 1938 Tamil film Jalaja, a production centered on Bharatanatyam. A prominent figure during the revival of Bharatanatyam, Bhanumathi was known for her innovative spirit. In the early 1930s, she was a notable rival to the acclaimed dancer Balasaraswathi. Interestingly, Bhanumathi also studied vocal music under Jayammal, Balasaraswathi's mother, and often incorporated her singing into her dance performances. She was an early adopter of the stitched Bharatanatyam attire popularized by Rukmini Devi Arundale, a choice that contrasted with some traditionalists like Balasaraswathi. Her talent gained international attention in 1932 when E. Krishna Iyer facilitated an offer for her to perform in the United States for two years. For her significant contributions to Bharatanatyam, Kumbakonam K. Bhanumathi was honored with the prestigious Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1973, India's highest recognition in the performing arts. She also received accolades from the Tamil Nadu Sangeetha Nataka Sangham. A 1993 documentary highlighted her performance of the Khamas swarajathi 'Maa Mohalahiri', a piece she taught to her granddaughter, Anbukarasi Maran.
