Kumkum Lal, an eminent figure in Indian classical dance, was born in Gaya, Bihar, and raised in Delhi, where her journey into dance began at the tender age of four, initially with Bharatanatyam. Her profound passion for Odissi was ignited upon witnessing Indrani Rehman's performance of the then-nascent dance form. She commenced her Odissi training under Guru Harekrishna Behera, subsequently becoming a devoted disciple of the legendary Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra, with whom she maintained a close association throughout his life. Beyond Odissi, Lal also delved into creative dance, studying and performing with Narendra Sharma, and explored Chhau under Guru Krishna Chandra Naik. Kumkum Lal held a significant leadership role as the head of the dance section at the Sangeet Natak Akademi. Her international contributions include introducing Odissi to Japan during her four-year residency there, where she extensively taught and performed, significantly fostering an appreciation for Indian performing arts. In 1986, she hosted Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra and a group of musicians, including Pt. Bhubaneswar Mishra, in Japan for a month-long series of workshops and lecture demonstrations for her students. She collaborated with Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra on new compositions and recompositions of Odissi pieces. Her scholarly pursuits are evidenced by a senior fellowship awarded by the Indian government to work on a Sanskrit treatise on Odissi. In recognition of her profound contributions to dance, Kumkum Lal was honored with the prestigious Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship in 2022. Her teaching legacy includes notable students such as Asako Takami, who became an acclaimed Odissi dancer in Japan, and other Japanese students who later continued their training in India.
