Lakshmi Gopalaswamy is an acclaimed Indian actress and classical Bharatanatyam dancer, born on January 7, 1970, in Bangalore, Karnataka, to M. K. Gopalaswamy and Dr. Uma Gopalaswamy. Her mother, a scholar of music, significantly influenced her artistic journey, encouraging her to pursue Bharatanatyam from a young age. Lakshmi began her initial dance training at the age of eight under Smt. Padmini Rao, a disciple of Kittappa Pillai, focusing on foundational techniques. She completed her Rangapravesha, a formal debut performance, under Smt. Padmini Ramachandran in November 1988, having performed her first solo recital at Alliance Française in Bangalore at the age of 12. She further honed her skills under the able guidance of Guru Smt. Narmada (Tanjore style) and Prof. M.R. Krishnamurthy (Pandanallur style) for over 18 years. A performer of repute since childhood, Lakshmi Gopalaswamy has graced numerous prestigious stages, including the Madras Music Academy's annual conferences, the Spirit of Unity Concerts for National Integration, and the Surya Festival, where she helped inaugurate its international chapters in Rome and Vienna. She also appeared on the National Program of Dance, Doordarshan, in 1995 and is an auditioned 'A' Grade Artiste of Doordarshan. She has also performed at various cultural festivals conducted by the Department of Tourism at historical sites like Somnathpur, Hampi, Mysore Dasara, Pattadakal, and Badami. Beyond her distinguished dance career, Lakshmi Gopalaswamy has established herself as a sensitive and versatile actress, primarily in Malayalam cinema, with notable appearances in Kannada and Tamil films. Her film debut was in the 2000 Malayalam film "Arayannangalude Veedu." She is recognized for her ability to integrate semi-classical dance into her film roles, such as in "Kochu Kochu Santhoshangal." She believes in the traditional repertoire of Bharatanatyam, aiming to express every subtle nuance of music through the language of dance. Currently, she is pursuing a PhD in cultural studies, demonstrating her commitment to delving deeper into the art form and making it accessible globally. She has also conducted workshops for school children and taught Panchatantra Kathas using Bharatanatyam gestures. Awards & Honours: M.G.R.
