S. Narmada (September 22, 1942 – March 30, 2007), popularly known as Guru Narmada, was an acclaimed Indian classical dancer and guru specializing in Bharatanatyam, renowned for her mastery of the Tanjore style and her selfless dedication to training generations of dancers in Bangalore. Born in Bangalore, Karnataka, India, Narmada began her dance training at age six under Guru V. S. Kaushik. She later underwent 18 years of rigorous instruction in the Tanjore bani from the legendary Guru K. P. Kittappa Pillai of Thanjavur, a descendant of the Tanjore Quartet, becoming one of his prime disciples. Her arangetram, or debut performance, took place in 1953 at age eleven in Bangalore's Town Hall, where she presented two full margams over two days, earning early recognition including state and central government scholarships and a gold medal from the Maharaja of Mysore. After completing her B.Sc. from Mount Carmel College in 1964 and marrying in 1965, Narmada briefly paused her performing career following personal tragedies, including her husband's death in a 1970 accident. Encouraged by Kittappa Pillai, she shifted her focus to teaching. On September 5, 1978, she established her dance school, Shakuntala Nruthyalaya (also known as Shakuntala Nrityalaya or Shakuntala Dance School), in Bangalore, naming it after her mother, Shakuntala. For over 25 years, she nurtured students of all levels in a non-commercial, homely environment, emphasizing technical precision, nritta (pure dance), abhinaya (expression), and individual creativity within classical boundaries. Her teaching philosophy highlighted the retention of classicism alongside innovative use of rhythmic patterns, and she was known for inspiring students to retain their individuality and creative freedom within the classical framework. Guru Narmada was a mother figure to her students, known for her caring, loving, sharing, and giving qualities. She also served as a nattuvangam artist and choreographer, contributing to international performances. Her legacy endures through her global network of students and her profound impact on Bharatanatyam in Karnataka. For her significant contributions to the field of dance, she received numerous prestigious honors, including the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 2006.
