M. Subhashini Vijay Santhanam is a prominent Bharatanatyam dancer, teacher, and institution head, known for her dedication to promoting Indian classical dance globally. Her journey in dance began at the age of nine in Chennai, India, where she received her initial training at Prasannalya and Kalakshetra. She continued her advanced Bharatanatyam training at Kalakshetra until 1994, learning from several esteemed teachers. A significant milestone in her early career was her arangetram, a two-and-a-half-hour solo recital, performed at the age of twelve on January 16, 1988, at the Adyar Cultural Academy in Chennai. Subhashini expanded her dance repertoire by briefly training in Kathak with Smt. Priti Ghosh in Chennai in 2000 and is currently a Kathak student of Shri Murali Mohan Kalvakalva. Her teaching career commenced in 1995, during which she trained under Smt. Nandini Nagaraj and subsequently taught dance to Smt. Nandini Nagaraj's students from 1996 to 1998. In 2000, Subhashini Vijay Santhanam relocated to the United States, where she has since been actively involved in promoting Indian classical arts. She is the founder and artistic director of the From Within Academy (FWA) and FWN, with FWA recognized as one of Seattle's premier dance institutions. At the From Within Academy, she imparts advanced dance classes, nurturing the next generation of Bharatanatyam dancers. Her commitment to dance education extends to her role as the Global Dance Head at Spardha School of Music and Dance, an innovative online platform making Bharatanatyam accessible to students worldwide, particularly for Indians living abroad. Throughout her career, Subhashini has graced numerous stages, performing Bharatanatyam at venues such as the ISKON temple, Kaya Yoga Studio, and the Seattle Art Museum. Her contributions to the art form were recognized in 2003 when she received the Washington State Apprenticeship. She continues to inspire and train students, with notable disciples like Vidya Guhan, who completed her arangetram under Subhashini's guidance in July 2009.
