Madhura Phatak

Madhura Phatak is a renowned exponent of the North Indian classical dance form, Kathak. She began her Kathak training at the early age of five in her hometown of Pune. In 1990, she moved to Delhi to pursue advanced training in Kathak, where she had the privilege of being trained under Guru Padmashri Shovana Narayan. Phatak holds an M.Phil degree in German Studies, awarded in 1995 by Jawaharlal Nehru University. Her dissertation, "Dance a translation of literature" – A semiotic analysis, is recognized as an exemplary work of research, in which she explored German dance theater, contemporary choreography, and new aesthetic paradigms. Throughout her career, Madhura Phatak has performed extensively both in India and internationally, receiving widespread appreciation from audiences, art patrons, and dance critics. Her performances are noted for their brilliant balance of technical virtuosity and the emotive 'abhinaya' aspect of Kathak, characterized by breathtaking footwork, graceful movements, and a deep understanding of literature. Her repertoire includes compositions from both the Jaipur and Lucknow schools of Kathak. Beyond performing, Phatak is also a successful choreographer, integrating her knowledge of singing, theatre, and martial arts into her dance expressions. She has collaborated with international musicians and exponents of other Indian musical traditions. As a dedicated teacher, Madhura Phatak has worked extensively with adults and children, creating workshops and lecture demonstrations. Over two decades, she has engaged with more than 30,000 children and young adolescents, and has conducted "Dance to Happiness" workshops for school teachers.
