Mithun Shyam is a prominent Indian Bharatanatyam dancer, choreographer, and teacher based in Bengaluru, India. Born on June 11, 1982, he commenced his formal dance training in 1990, initially under Iravathi Naidu for two years. He then underwent over 25 years of dedicated tutelage under the late veteran Guru Smt. Padmini Ramachandran, specializing in the Vazhuvoor bani of Bharatanatyam. He completed his Rangapravesham (debut performance) in 2000 and successfully passed junior and senior Bharatanatyam examinations conducted by the Karnataka Government. Beyond dance, Mithun Shyam also trained in classical vocal music under Guru Smt. Padma S. Murthy, completing junior examinations, and currently practices Carnatic Vocal under Vidwan Shri Debur V. Nagarajan. In 1998, he established Vaishnavi Natyashala in Bengaluru, an institution dedicated to propagating classical dance and music, which now trains over 500 students in Bharatanatyam, Carnatic Vocal, and Yoga. As a choreographer, Mithun Shyam is recognized for his theme-based performances that often address social and gender-based issues, such as “Purushantargatha” (gender fluidity), “Manaha” (mental health), and “The 18 Golden Steps,” which engaged with the Sabarimala temple entry controversy. Mithun Shyam is an 'A' graded artist of Doordarshan and an empanelled artist of the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), New Delhi. He has performed extensively across India and internationally, including tours to the United States, China (International Festival of Intangible Cultural Heritage, International Country Music Week Festival 2013), Thailand, and the Middle East, conducting workshops and lecture demonstrations. His notable solo performances include those at Rasa Sanje (Bangalore), Dasyam Festival (Chennai), India International Centre (New Delhi), and Raindrops Festival (Mumbai). He has also played lead roles in dance productions directed by his Guru Smt. Padmini Ramachandran and in productions by Bollywood star Smt. Hema Malini. He initiated “MILANA,” an interactive dance exchange program.
