Kalaimamani S.K. Kameswaran was a distinguished Bharatanatyam natyacharya who established a long and impactful career in Chennai, India, beginning in the 1960s. He received his foundational training in both Bharatanatyam and Carnatic vocal music from Mayavaram Mahadeva Pillai. Kameswaran was notable among gurus of his era for performing nattuvangam while simultaneously singing for his students. He further honed his expertise under the renowned natyacharya Vazhuvoor Ramiah Pillai, and his association included singing for several of Pillai's disciples, such as Kamala. Through this experience, Kameswaran deeply absorbed the intricate nuances of the Vazhuvoor bani (style) in both choreography and execution, a style he subsequently propagated through his teaching. In 1968, S.K. Kameswaran and his wife, Saroja Kameswaran, co-founded Sri Mahalakshmi Natyalaya in Chennai, an institution that celebrated its fiftieth anniversary on September 5, 2018. Saroja Kameswaran, who initially trained under Bhupal and later became Kameswaran's pupil and wife, also served as a faculty member for dance at the Rosary Matriculation School in Mylapore for over 40 years. Together, the Kameswarans trained numerous students, with scores having their arangetrams under their guidance. Their school, Sri Mahalakshmi Natyalaya, has produced high-caliber students in the Vazhuvoor Bhani and has been invited to perform at prestigious events like the Chidambaram Dance festival. The gurus also taught at other institutions in Chennai, including the Iyal Isai Naataka Manram, contributing over sixty years of service to Bharatanatyam. S.K. Kameswaran is recognized with the title Kalaimamani and has received various awards for his contributions to classical dance.
