🪔 About
Kalaimamani S.K. Kameswaran was a Bharatanatyam natyacharya who had a long and successful career in Chennai from the 1960s onward. He trained under Mayavaram Mahadeva Pillai in both Bharatanatyam and Carnatic vocal music, and was one of the few gurus of his time who sang for his pupils while performing the nattuvangam himself. He also trained under the natyacharya Vazhuvoor Ramiah Pillai, and sang for several of his disciples including Kamala, absorbing the nuances of the Vazhuvoor bani in both choreography and execution — the style he went on to teach. In 1967 he and his wife, Saroja Kameswaran, launched Sri Mahalakshmi Natyalaya on Bazaar Lane in Mylapore, Chennai, naming the school after their daughter Mahalakshmi, who directs it today.
