Parvathavarthini Chidambaram is a prominent figure in Indian classical dance, serving as the artistic director of 'Bharata' – the school of Indian dance and Music in Rochester, NY. She is an ardent disciple of the world-renowned classical dancer and research scholar, Dr. Padma Subrahmanyam. Parvathavarthini received specialized training in Bharata Nrityam, a margi technique of pedagogy authentically based on Bharata's Natya Sastra, which was revived by her guru after extensive research. She underwent 15 years of rigorous training in the traditional "Gurukula Pattern" from the young age of seven. Her stage performances began with her arangetram in 1989. Since then, she has performed extensively across India, including prestigious sabhas in Chennai, both as a soloist and alongside her guru. She has also appeared on Doordarshan and other television channels. In 1996, she represented India at the Festival of India in Thailand. After moving to the United States in 1998, Parvathavarthini continued her passion for the art, presenting numerous group and solo performances. She was featured in the documentary "Identity Through Art" as one of Rochester's six Asian American artists and was recognized as an inspiring woman changemaker in "THE CHANGEMAKERS" exhibit (Rochester Women who changed the World). Her academy, 'Bharata,' is affiliated with Alagappa University in India, offering diploma and degree courses in dance and music.
