Pandit Jwala Prasad was a distinguished Indian classical musician and composer, renowned for his significant contributions to Kathak dance. He received his early training in Hindustani music and the folk music of Himachal Pradesh and Rajasthan from his father, Shiv Prasad. Prasad carved a niche for himself as a prolific composer and singer, providing musical accompaniment to many leading Kathak dancers of his era. His collaborations included esteemed artists such as Durga Lal, Vijai Shankar, Uma Sharma, Shovana Narayan, and Geetanjali Lal, performing at prestigious dance festivals both within India and internationally. Beyond live performances, he also composed music for various dance-dramas, including notable productions like "The Temptation of Vivekananda" (1995), "Classical Dance of India" (2000), and "Geet Govind" (2001). His musical versatility extended to film, where he provided music direction for Hindi and other language films. In recognition of his profound impact on dance music, Shri Jwala Prasad was honored with the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 2012. His musical legacy continues through his son, Madho Prasad, who also carries on the family tradition of vocal music and harmonium accompaniment for Kathak dancers.
