🪔 About

Guru Rajalakshmi Venkateshwar was a highly respected figure in Indian classical dance, renowned for her contributions to Bharatanatyam. A senior disciple of the esteemed Guru K.N. Dandayuthapani Pillai, she dedicated her life to propagating the art form. Inspired by her guru and motivated by her mother Saradambal, Rajalakshmi Venkateshwar founded Bharata Natya Kalalaya in Kolkata in 1949. This institution became one of the pioneering schools to offer Bharatanatyam training in the city, shaping numerous young artists into accomplished dancers who have made their mark both in India and internationally. Beyond traditional training, Kalalaya also extended its reach by conducting special classes for children with spasticity and those from underprivileged backgrounds, and organized programs for social service organizations like CRY. Guru Rajalakshmi Venkateshwar passed away on July 12, 2021, leaving behind a significant legacy that continues to be carried forward by her disciples and the institutions she inspired, including the Bharatanatya Kalalaya in Mumbai.
