Padmashree Ranjana Gauhar is a globally renowned Odissi dancer, choreographer, and guru, recognized for her exceptional artistry and significant contributions to Indian classical dance. She received her foundational training in Odissi from the legendary Guru Mayadhar Raut and further honed her understanding under Smt. Aloka Paniker. Gauhar's distinctive style is also influenced by her extensive training in other classical Indian dance forms, including Chhau, Kathak, and Manipuri. Her career spans numerous prestigious national and international performances, including at the Queen Elizabeth Royal Festival Hall in the UK in 1981 and in Cambodia in 2004. She has showcased Odissi to audiences across the UK, Italy, France, Japan, Cambodia, Bhutan, Vietnam, Sri Lanka, Africa, Mauritius, Egypt, and Spain. Beyond her performing career, Ranjana Gauhar is a multifaceted artist involved in theatre, films, production, choreography, and dance education. She authored the book "Odissi – The Dance Divine," released in 2007, and has produced and directed several ballets on modern and mythological themes. In 1987, she founded 'Utsav – Educational & Cultural Society' in New Delhi, which includes Ranjana's Odissi Dance Academy. Through Utsav, she perpetuates the Guru-Shishya Parampara, guiding numerous disciples in the nuances of Odissi. The academy provides a platform for young dancers through festivals like 'Su-Tarang' and trains senior disciples for Utsav's repertory. Gauhar also organizes major festivals such as 'Sare Jahan Se Accha' and 'Unbound Beats of India' to promote Indian art and culture. She has also curated workshops and seminars for underprivileged children in rural areas. Ranjana Gauhar has held significant roles in national cultural bodies, including as an Expert Member for the Ministry of Culture, a former Executive Board Member of the Sangeet Natak Akademi, and a former Executive Board Member of the Kalakshetra Foundation.
