Kanaka Srinivasan, born in Chennai in 1947, is a highly acclaimed Indian classical dancer and choreographer, recognized as a leading exponent of the Vazhuvoor bani (style) of Bharatanatyam. She received her foundational training in Bharatanatyam from the renowned guru Vazhuvoor Ramaiah Pillai in Chennai, who was instrumental in establishing the distinctive Vazhuvoor style. Srinivasan's artistic repertoire extends beyond Bharatanatyam, as she also incorporated elements from Kathak, studying under Vishnu Vaichalkar, and Mohiniattam, under Kalamandalam Gopalakrishnan. Her performances are celebrated for their graceful nritta (pure dance) and sensitive abhinaya (expressive storytelling). Throughout her career, Kanaka Srinivasan has made significant contributions to Bharatanatyam by collaborating with Sanskrit and Tamil scholars to revive ancient texts, transforming them into innovative dance pieces. She has also choreographed dance-dramas inspired by the works of the classical poet Kalidasa. As a prominent guru, she established an institution in Delhi, where she has dedicated herself to training generations of young dancers, emphasizing the preservation and propagation of traditional dance forms. Her captivating recitals have graced numerous prominent Indian festivals and cultural venues, including a notable Bharatanatyam performance in 1986 organized by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR).
