Sandhya Suresh

Sandhya Suresh is a dance artist, choreographer, and teacher based in Singapore and the Netherlands, known for her work in Odissi and contemporary dance. Her dance journey began at the age of four with ballet lessons, followed a year later by Indian classical dance training at the Temple of Fine Arts International. She furthered her education at LASALLE College of the Arts, where she earned a BA(Hons) in Dance from Goldsmiths, University of London. In 2012, she completed her Arangetram, a debut Bharatanatyam graduation solo, from the Temple of Fine Arts (TFA) in Singapore. After a critical illness at the age of 21, Suresh committed to dance professionally, becoming a teacher and company manager at CHOWK, an established dance company in Singapore founded by Raka Maitra. She currently serves as the Associate Artistic Director at Chowk Productions. Beyond Odissi, she also teaches basic Western contemporary techniques and works as an independent dance artist. Her choreographic works often explore the intersection of classical and contemporary forms, as seen in her "Body language" series, which uses Odissi as a point of departure to question traditional and modern dichotomies. Suresh has performed on international stages, including the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, Kalaa Utsavam, dan:s festival, Continuum- T.H.E dance company, the Queensland Poetry Festival, and The Kennedy Centre in Washington D.C.. Her choreographic credits include 'Gemini- a dance concert' (2011), 'insight-out' (2013), 'Smoking Gun' (2014), 'Reena; The Ideal' (2015), 'Man.Untold' (2018), and "Body Language" I, II and III (2020). She also co-choreographed and performed 'Closing Moments' (2016) with Rianto. Currently, she is pursuing an MA in Contemporary Theatre, Dance and Dramaturgy at Utrecht University, where her research focuses on reclaiming female sexuality in the Odissi body.
