🪔 About
Raka Maitra is a renowned dancer and choreographer, recognized for her innovative blending of classical Indian dance with contemporary styles. She received her training in Odissi from esteemed gurus Madhavi Mudgal and Daksha Mashruwala. Additionally, she underwent intensive studies in Serraikella Chhau under Sashadhar Acharya. Maitra's artistic journey began with a deep dedication to Indian classical forms, evolving into an exploration of their potential for expression in a globalized, postmodern world. She founded Chowk Productions in Singapore in 2014, after initially starting to teach Odissi to a small group of students in 2007, which eventually grew into a community. As the Artistic Director of Chowk, she explores the notion of 'Asian Culture' through her unique language of contemporary dance, with the martial arts and classical Indian dance forming the basis of her movement. Her work often deconstructs Odissi grammar, highlighting elements like the 'chowk' position. Maitra's productions, regularly commissioned by The Esplanade, Singapore, have toured internationally to venues such as the Kennedy Centre in Washington D.C., Melkweg in Amsterdam, and Les Hivernales in Avignon. She was also an associate artist with The Substation from 2007-2011 and co-artistic director from 2020-2021. Awards & Honours: Shringarmani.
