Shambhu Maharaj, born Shambhunath Mishra in Lucknow in 1910, was a legendary Kathak dancer and guru of the Lucknow Gharana. He was the youngest son of Kalka Prasad Maharaj, a court dancer to Nawab Wajid Ali Shah. His early training in Kathak came from his father, his uncle Bindadin Maharaj, and his elder brothers Achchan Maharaj and Lacchu Maharaj. He also studied Hindustani classical music under Ustad Rahimuddin Khan. Shambhu Maharaj made his professional debut in 1926 at the All India Music Conference in Lucknow, where he received a gold medal. He was renowned for his mastery of both nritta (pure dance) and abhinaya (expression), particularly excelling in the romantic persona of Krishna (Natwar Krishna). In 1952, he joined the Bharatiya Kala Kendra (later Kathak Kendra) in New Delhi, becoming the head of its Dance (Kathak) department. He played a crucial role in introducing Kathak to the cultural capital of newly independent India. Throughout his career, Shambhu Maharaj received numerous accolades, including the title of "Nritya Samrat" in 1936 at a music conference in Dehra Dun, and "Abhinaya Chakravarti" in Madras. The Government of India honored him with the Padma Shri in 1958 and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship in 1967 for his immense contributions to Indian classical dance. He dedicated himself to restoring Kathak to its "pristine glory" and trained a multitude of students who went on to become prominent exponents of the art form.
