Muckatira Shilpa Nanjappa, an acclaimed Bharatanatyam artist from Kodagu, Karnataka, is recognized as one of the most sought-after dancers of her generation in India. Initiated into Bharatanatyam at the tender age of seven, she underwent extensive training for over two decades under the tutelage of the iconic Guru Padmini Ramachandran in Bengaluru. Shilpa Nanjappa is an 'A' grade artist of Doordarshan and an empanelled artist with the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) and SPIC MACAY. Beyond her captivating performances, Shilpa Nanjappa is a multi-faceted artist, excelling as a choreographer, teacher, research scholar, writer, linguist, poet, social activist, and orator. She holds a Master's degree in English Literature. Her career highlights include over 200 solo performances worldwide, with international appearances in Germany, Maldives, Lithuania, and Australia. She represented India and conducted workshops on Indian Classical Dance at "One World-2006" in Karlsruhe, Germany, and performed for the President and First Lady of Maldives during the India-Maldives Friendship Week in 2009. Shilpa Nanjappa is also the Chief Editor of 'Nrithyam,' an annual dance magazine. Her research work focuses on the adaptation of Kodava language compositions into the classical Bharatanatyam format, a project for which she was awarded a prestigious Junior Fellowship by the Indian Government's Centre for Cultural Resources and Training (CCRT) for 2019-2021. She successfully submitted her 150-page thesis on this topic in 2021, aiming to popularize the endangered Kodava language through dance. She continues to teach advanced classes in Bengaluru and conducts dance workshops globally.
