Sivagami Vanka, often referred to as Shivy Vanka, is a distinguished figure in Indian classical dance, specializing in Bharathanatyam. She is the founder, artistic director, principal teacher, choreographer, and a performer at the Kalabharathi School of Dance. Vanka commenced her extensive Bharathanatyam training at the age of five in India. Her teaching career began in Cleveland in 1981, and she subsequently relocated her school to Portland, Oregon, in 1987, establishing it as a premier institution for Bharathanatyam in the region. With over three decades of experience, Sivagami Vanka has trained hundreds of students in both Cleveland and Portland, instilling in them discipline, dedication, and determination. She is recognized for her rigorous and intensive training methods, which ensure the authenticity and integrity of the dance form are maintained. As a performer, Vanka is acclaimed for her *abhinaya* (storytelling) and mature portrayal of characters, having performed across India, Africa, the USA, and Europe. Her choreographic prowess is a hallmark of Kalabharathi, with productions spanning ancient Hindu mythology to contemporary social themes. Additionally, she is an eloquent speaker and educator, frequently conducting lec-dems at universities and public events.
