Smt. Sailaja Shivakumar is a distinguished figure in Indian classical dance, known for her expertise in Bharatanatyam and Mohini Attam. She began her dance journey at a very young age, starting her training under Guru Ms. R. Padma. She further honed her skills through advanced courses with Gurus Shivakumar and Narasimhacharis. Sailaja Shivakumar is a senior disciple and the wife of Guru S. Shivakumar. She successfully completed a Diploma in Bharatanatyam and Nattuvangam, showcasing her comprehensive understanding of these art forms. Her first performance in Bharatanatyam took place in March 1991 as part of the Tamilnadu Government's Chennai Trade Fair Festival program. She also performed her Mohini Attam arangetram in 2003 under the guidance of a Guru. In 1996, Smt. Sailaja Shivakumar co-founded "SHIVAKALALAYAM (Regd)-School of Fine Arts" in Thiruvanmiyur, Chennai, alongside her husband, Guru Shri. S. Shivakumar. The academy, established on July 14, 1996, focuses on imparting training in fine arts, particularly Bharatanatyam. Through Shivakalalayam, she and her husband are dedicated to training numerous aspiring artists in Bharatanatyam, Nattuvangam, Mohini Attam, and offering teaching courses in Bharatanatyam, emphasizing adherence to classicism and a strong foundation rooted in tradition. The year 2021 marked her 30th year of active involvement in the Bharatanatyam field.
