Sangita Kalanidhi K. Ponniah Pillai (1888-1945) was a highly renowned musician, composer, and scholar of Indian classical music and dance, particularly Bharatanatyam. Born in 1888 in Pandanainallur, he was a distinguished scion of the Tanjore Quartet lineage, being a fifth-generation descendant of Sivanandam, one of the original Quartet members. His father was Kannuswami Nattuvanar, and his maternal grandfather was the veteran Nattuvanar Pandanallur Meenakshisundaram Pillai. Ponniah Pillai received extensive training from a young age. He learned music, dance, and mridangam for 15 years from his uncle, Pandanainallur Meenakshisundaram Pillai. He also received initial training in these arts from his father, Kannuswami Pillai, and pursued further vocal training under Tiruvotriyur Tyagayyar, the son of Veenai Kuppayyar. His career saw him contribute significantly to the academic and performance aspects of Carnatic music and Bharatanatyam. He served as a music professor at the Music College established by Raja Sir Annamalai Chettiyar in Chidambaram, where he taught vocal music and mridangam. He was also a member of the Music Board at the University of Madras and an expert at the Music Academy. Later, he headed the Department of Music at Annamalai University and served at the Summer School of Music, Madras University. In 1941, he presided over the Tamil Isai Conference in Trichy. A prolific composer, K. Ponniah Pillai created numerous swarajatis, varnams, kritis, and tillanas, primarily in Tamil, addressing diverse themes. He authored "Raja Annamalai Tamizhisai Karuvoolam" and "Eyal," and published "Tanjai Peruvudaiyan Perisai" and "Navasandhi Kavuthuvam." His compositions were posthumously published in 1949 by his sons, K.P. Krishnamoorthy Pillai (Kittappa Pillai) and K.P. Sivanandam Pillai, under the title "Raajah Annaamalai Tamil Isai Karuvoolam."
