Sowmya Kumaran is an accomplished and multifaceted artist, excelling as a Bharatanatyam dancer, choreographer, vocalist, and educator. She holds a Master of Fine Arts in Bharatanatyam and received her foundational training from distinguished gurus including Jayalakshmi Arunachalam and Dr. Saraswathi of Vipanchee. She continues advanced study in abhinaya with Bragha Bessell. Sowmya is the founder and artistic director of Nrithya Sangeeth, a school for South Indian performing arts established in 2007 in the suburbs of Chicago, USA. As an educator, she emphasizes both practical training and theoretical foundations, and her students have gained recognition in competitions across the United States and in Chennai, India. Her choreography is noted for its seamless blend of intricate nritta and emotionally expressive abhinaya. Sowmya Kumaran is the daughter of renowned Tamil stage artiste Kalaimamani Kathadi S. Ramamurthy, carrying forward a rich artistic legacy. She is also a skilled Thirupugazh vocalist, performing and teaching with her sister as part of the Chicago Thirupugazh Anbargal.
