🪔 About
Subathra Subramaniam is a distinguished choreographer, dancer, and educator, renowned for her innovative fusion of Bharatanatyam with contemporary choreography and scientific concepts. Born in Malaysia, she began her Bharatanatyam training at the age of seven. After moving to London, she continued her rigorous classical dance education under Guru Prakash Yadagudde at the Bhavan Centre, Institute of Indian Fine Arts and Culture, starting in 1988. Subramaniam's career is marked by significant contributions to the South Asian dance landscape in the UK. In 1997, she co-founded Angika Dance with Mayuri Boonham, serving as its artistic director until the company's closure in 2008. During this period, she choreographed and performed in numerous acclaimed works, including “Sudarsana,” “The-Triple-Hymn,” and “Kala,” which toured nationally and internationally. She also held positions as an associate artist (1998–1999) and co-artist in residence (2004–2006) at The Place in London. In 2009, Subramaniam established Sadhana Dance, where she continues to serve as artistic director. Her work with Sadhana Dance is characterized by cross-art collaborations and research undertaken with scientists and academic institutions, exploring themes that bridge dance and scientific understanding. Notable touring productions include “The Shiver,” “Elixir,” and “Under My Skin,” the latter of which was shortlisted for the Medicine Unboxed Creative Prize in 2015. She was also artist in residence at The Maudsley hospital for her work “Unkindest Cut.” Beyond her performance and choreographic work, Subramaniam is a dedicated educator. She holds a Masters Degree in Education and a PGCE in Science, having taught science in secondary schools for several years. She is currently a part-time science teacher at Princes Risborough School and a visiting lecturer at Bucks New University. In January 2020, she was appointed Artistic Director and Joint-CEO of Akademi, a leading South Asian dance company in the UK, further solidifying her influence in the field. Her recent works for Akademi include “Plastic Drastic Fantastic” and “Pravaas.” She has also been involved in projects like Cape Farewell, raising awareness about climate change through art. Awards & Honours: Medicine Unboxed Creative Prize (2015).
