🪔 About
Dr. Subhamita Maitra is an Indian classical dancer specializing in Odissi, who also holds a PhD in neuroscience. Her formal introduction to dance began at the age of six in 1994. She dedicated 16 years to learning Kathak and Rabindra Nritya, making her debut performance in 1997 as Princess Kalavatikanya in the Bengali dance drama "Buddhu Bhutum". After completing her degrees in Kathak, she pursued formal training in Odissi. Currently, Dr. Maitra is recognized as a solo Odissi artiste, actively performing on both national and international stages. She also conducts classes and works as a choreographer. Her dedication to Odissi has been acknowledged with the "Nrityashree" award, which she received after passing the 8th-year examination from Bangiya Sangeet Kala Kendra. She continues to refine her talent under the guidance of Guru Smt. Rina Jana. Beyond her artistic pursuits, Dr. Maitra is a neuroscience researcher, engaged in studies on the genetic and cognitive aspects of neuro-psychiatric disorders. Her research aims to explore the potential impact of Indian classical dance as a cognitive therapeutic intervention. She has presented her Odissi performances at various cultural events, including the 6th Indian Cultural Festival in Luleå. Dr. Maitra views dance as an educator that teaches self-expression, boosts progress, and helps control emotions, contributing significantly to her personal and professional well-being.
