Thingbaijam Babu Singh was a distinguished Indian classical dancer, academic, and choreographer, primarily known for his profound contributions to the Manipuri dance form. Born on February 8, 1936, in Lairensajik, a village in the state of Manipur, India, he emerged as a pivotal figure in preserving and promoting Manipuri dance. Singh served as the Pradhan Guru (chief instructor) of the Pung and Raas traditions of Manipuri dance at the prestigious Jawaharlal Nehru Manipur Dance Academy (JNMDA) in Imphal, an institution affiliated with the Sangeet Natak Akademi. His role at the academy solidified his legacy as a significant teacher and mentor, shaping generations of Manipuri dancers. Throughout his career, Thingbaijam Babu Singh was recognized for his innovative choreography and his dedication to teaching. He authored the book "Meitei Punglon Raga Ahouba," further contributing to the academic and theoretical understanding of Manipuri dance. His influence extended through his numerous students, many of whom became renowned performers themselves. For his exceptional contributions to Indian classical dance, particularly Manipuri, Singh was honored with the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1990. The Government of India further acknowledged his artistic and academic excellence by bestowing upon him the Padma Shri, the fourth-highest civilian honor, in 2007. His work, including choreographies like "Guru Vandana" and a rechoreographed version of "Dashavatar," continued to be performed and celebrated.
