🪔 About
Tirur Nambissan (1942–1994) was a renowned Kathakali singer, born as Narayanan Nambissan in Tirur, Malappuram district, Kerala, India. His early life was marked by tragedy; before the age of 15, he lost his mother, three brothers, and father, and his younger sister died by suicide, which interrupted his formal and musical education. Despite these hardships, his innate musical talent was recognized by masters like N.K. Vasudeva Panikkar, his first classical music teacher, who guided him towards Kerala Kalamandalam. At Kerala Kalamandalam, Nambissan underwent an intensive eight-year course in Kathakali music under the tutelage of prominent gurus including Kalamandalam Neelakantan Nambisan, Sivaraman Nair, and Kavungal Madhava Panikkar. He excelled in his studies, completing the course with first-class honors in 1965, and even performed as a 'ponnani' (main singer) for Parassini Kaliyogam during his second year of training. He debuted on stage in 1960. Throughout his career, Nambissan was known for his conservative approach to Kathakali music, advocating for the traditional 'sopanasamgeetham' style and resisting experimental changes. He served as the main singer for the Parassikkadavu Muthappan Kathakali Yogam for an extended period and performed extensively across Kerala and beyond as both a 'ponnani' and 'shakidi' (helping singer). He also dedicated himself to teaching, holding positions at institutions such as Perur Gandhi Sevasadan, International Kathakali Centre New Delhi, Unnayivariyer Smaraka Kalanilayam Irinjalakkuda, Parassini Kaliyogam, Peringode Kathakali Promotion Society, and Kerala Kalamandalam. In the 1980s, he formed a popular vocal duo with Unnikrishna Kurup. Tirur Nambissan passed away on August 10, 1994, at the age of 54, due to a brain haemorrhage, after suffering from chronic illnesses like diabetes.
