🪔 About
Thrissur C. Narendran, a distinguished Mridangam artist from Kerala, India, was born on December 15, 1951. He hails from a family deeply rooted in performing arts, with his maternal grandfather, Manakulam Late Valiya Kunhunni Raja "Kakkad Karanavarppad," being the progenitor of the renowned Kerala Kalamandalam. Narendran's musical journey began at the tender age of seven when Sri Kongorppilly Parameswaran Namboodiri recognized his talent during a dance rehearsal at Manakkulam Palace and initiated him into Mridangam. His interest in music was further cultivated by David Bhagavathar of Kunnamkulam, and he received advanced training from Sri E. P. Narayana Pisharodi and Koduvayur Radhakrishnan. A pivotal point in his education was becoming one of the early disciples of the legendary Palghat R. Raghu in 1973, where he honed intricate Mridangam techniques through a Government of India scholarship. Narendran's illustrious career spans over five decades, during which he has accompanied more than five generations of eminent Carnatic musicians. He made his concert debut at the age of 10 and, by 15, had already performed alongside stalwarts like Chembai Vaidyanatha Bhagavathar and K. J. Yesudas. His extensive list of collaborations includes maestros such as Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer, M. S. Subbulakshmi, Palghat K. V. Narayanaswamy, Dr. M. Balamuralikrishna, D. K. Pattammal, M.D. Ramanathan, Maharajapuram Santhanam, M.L. Vasanthakumari, T.M. Krishna, Bombay Jayashree, and Sudha Raghunathan. He has performed widely across India, Asia, and North America. Beyond his performances, Narendran has also contributed as a teacher, notably for the Center for World Music from 1984 to 1985. He served as a staff artist at All India Radio from 1992 to 2011, achieving the distinction of a "Top Rank Artist." His unique style is characterized by intricate rhythmic patterns, a keen sense of proportion, sharp anticipation, carefully placed silences, and a soft touch on the Mridangam. He is currently settled in Chennai. Awards & Honours: First Prize in Percussion (1964), First Prize in Music Competition, Thanjavur Vaidyanatha Iyer award, NADAKKANAL (1999), Maharajapuram Santhanam Foundation Meritorious award (1999), VANI KALA SUDHAKARA (2000), ASTHANA VIDWAN (2001), MADHURA MURALI PURASKAR (2012), LAYAPRATHIBHA - HARMONIAM CHAKRAVARTHY KOTTARA SANKUNNY NAIR MEMORIAL AWARD (2013), Dr. UMAYALPURAM SIVARAMAN AWARD FOR THE "BEST MRUDANGA VIDWAN" (2015), Sangita Kala Acharya (2026).
