Usha Gupta is a highly respected figure in Indian classical dance, recognized for her dedication to promoting arts and culture, particularly Kathak. Born in Jalandhar, Punjab, India, in 1941, she began her journey in dance and music at the age of four or five, encouraged by her family. She holds two master's degrees in music and dance. Early in her career, Gupta worked as a teacher and a featured singer on All India Radio, and in the 1960s, she choreographed dances for television in New Delhi. She spent two decades living, teaching, and performing in the Middle East, including Dubai and Qatar. In 1989, Gupta immigrated to Edmonton, Canada, where she established Usha Kala Niketan, also known as Usha Arts Studio, starting with just two students in her basement. Her academy quickly grew, attracting between 100 and 150 students, and over her 30 years of teaching in Canada, she has instructed more than 10,000 individuals. Gupta is celebrated for her innovative approach, blending traditional Kathak from the Lucknow gharana with contemporary Western dance styles, including flamenco. She is the artistic director of the Usha Gupta Dance Entourage, a professional company that has toured major productions like "Khoj (The Search)" across Canada and to ten cities in India. An octogenarian, Gupta continues to practice dance for approximately five hours daily and performs in her shows. She is considered an ambassador of cultural diversity in Canada, having played a significant role in building Indian culture through teaching, festival presentations, and fundraising. Her contributions have been recognized with numerous accolades, including induction into Edmonton's Arts & Culture Hall of Fame.
