Vidhya Subramanian is an acclaimed Bharatanatyam dancer, choreographer, teacher, and actress, recognized for her expertise in the Vazhuvoor style. Born in Chennai, India, she began her Bharatanatyam training at the age of eight. She received her rigorous training in Chennai under eminent gurus S.K. Rajarathnam, Padma Subrahmanyam, and the renowned Abhinaya exponent Kalanidhi Narayanan. Vidhya performed her arangetram, her debut solo performance, in 1984 at the age of sixteen. After establishing herself as a performer across India, she moved to the United States in 1990. In California, she founded the Lasya Dance Company, through which she continues to perform and choreograph. She also established Kala Vedika in the Bay Area, an organization dedicated to fostering a deeper understanding of Indian classical dance by bridging performers and audiences. As an inventive choreographer, Vidhya has created productions that explore significant cultural and social themes, including female empowerment and patriarchal structures. Her performances have garnered international acclaim, with The New York Times praising her work for its "internal glow of felt emotion" and The Times of India noting her "rich grace in 'adavus' and [a] striking sense of the aesthetic." Beyond dance, Vidhya holds a Master's degree in Theatre Arts and has extended her artistic endeavors into film, notably playing the role of Vaanavan Maadevi in Mani Ratnam's Tamil films *Ponniyin Selvan: I* (2022) and *Ponniyin Selvan: II* (2023). She actively teaches Bharatanatyam in the Bay Area, mentoring students and dancers.
